Alaskan History Magazine has been suspended for an indeterminate length of time. With only one year of publication, Alaskan History Magazine has been too fragile to survive the catastrophic impact of the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. For more information click here.
Alaskan History Magazine
Alaskan History Magazine is an independently produced magazine dedicated to portraying the colorful and important past of the Last Frontier as an interesting and exciting journey of exploration. The style is conversational, yet confident and informative, bringing the stories of the people, places and events which shaped Alaskan history to a wide readership. This magazine is not intended to be an authoritative journal of history, but simply an effort to share interesting photos, stories, and events from Alaska’s past and to encourage its readers to learn more.
At this time Alaskan History Magazine has a staff of one: Me, Helen Hegener. I am the author of more than a dozen books on Alaska’s history, and I spent 30 years as the co-Publisher and Managing Editor of a nationally recognized and award-winning magazine on alternative education.
I will accept both queries and completed articles, reprints, book excerpts, interviews, and more. Article submissions between 500 and 3,000 words are welcome on speculation; longer submissions will be considered but 5,000 words is my firm limit. Please include a brief biographical note (50-200 words) to run with your article. I can work with almost any format, or we will work it out together.
Alaskan History is a photo-heavy magazine. I welcome black-and-white and color photographs, please include captions, credits, and sources. If you do not have photos available I will research your subject and select appropriate photographs to run with the article.
I request one-time rights for serial print use, anthology rights, and perpetual electronic use. All other rights remain yours.
I will accept submissions at any time, via mail, email, or via my website Contact form. Alaskan History Magazine is published bimonthly, with issue submissions closing 30 days prior to the issue date (June 1st for the July/August issue).
I am not in a position to offer payment for articles at this time. Contributor copies are sent to writers whose work appears in that issue, and a one-year subscription to the online edition of the magazine at the digital publishing site issuu.com will be extended.
